Some people think that cats are safer outdoors in the country than in cities. That's not the case. Most farmers and ranchers own dogs which are not friendly to cats. Many farmers and ranchers consider cats to be vermin, like rats and won't hesitate to shoot them or poison them. Also in the country cats are more likely to freeze to death in the winter or die from lack of water in the summer than in cities. Domesticated cats are no match for most wild animals. In some places, western Nebraska (midwest USA), for example, coyotes commonly make a meal of cats. Owls will carry off cats (and small dogs). In Florida and Louisiana aligators will eat anything that gets close to them, including the occasional bobcat (wild cat), domesitcated cat, or dog.
In both the cities and the country cats allowed outdoors are tortured and killed by humans who think its fun to abuse animals.
